Lovin' Every Minute of It!

FDL: Hey, Mitch, Come Out and Face the People

"Sorry, Republicans. Not even your gated communities and private security details can protect you from the wrath of the people you’ve been doing your damnedest to ignore for the past several years.

I love the sound of Republicans cowering before the will of The People. It sounds like…victory."

Casablanca

PAJIBA'S review of Casablanca

I had, of course, seen Casablanca on Channel 5 in New York when I was a kid.

Channel 5 and Channel 11 showed ALL of the old black and white movies back in the day (Channel 7 showed way-cool 60s movies in their 4:30 Movie) - Cagney, Bogie, the musicals, the Bowery Boys -- Channel 5 gave us everything. So I thought I had seen Casablanca.

Then the Carnegie Hall Cinema showed it one night, so I traveled from Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn to Carnegie Hall to see it - quite alone, of course - I knew no one then (or now) who loved these things like I did. The Carnegie Hall was a nice little upscale revival house -- the first time I had ever seen pastries and lattes in the lobby!

The lights went down, and that map of the world came up on the screen...and I was transported. I honestly don't think that I've come back yet. See this in a theater if the opportunity ever arises.

Brownshirt defending of man-on-man sex in public toilets

From Eschaton comments:

dave™© : Personally, I am relishing the prospect of the coming weeks of fervent brownshirt defending of man-on-man sex in public toilets.

Rare event noted: Carville was great on NBC this morning on this issue. He was split-screened with some thug tool, and when Lauer handed him the Sen Craig question, Carville just grinned (scary!) and lit up the Thug - said "I'm not surprised and I expect to see more", and called the Thugs lying deceitful Clinton-haters, and maybe this will finally end this fake 'culture war' of theirs so we can get some real work done.

The Thug tool, reeling from being hit by the chair, said that there were a couple of Dems in the pokey, too. Carville sneered at him as he wiped the blood from his face.

Vicious and fun. More, please.

Morford: Thank God You Are Not Karl Rove

Thank God You Are Not Karl Rove
You have many things for which you can be deeply grateful. Here is one of the biggest

By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist

Because now perhaps you are reading up on the rise and fall and much-desirable end of this one particular man, this dank, sweaty, adipose embodiment of a sad political caricature, this shockingly powerful force of darkness and cruelty and pure, unfiltered iniquity known to the world as Karl Rove.

And somehow, looking at him, seeing the glistening, pallid face of true contempt as he finally, blessedly exits the main political stage, you feel better. Much, much better. In fact, somehow you feel like falling to your knees and offering sincere thanks, hot heaps of glorious gratitude to the gods of fate and time and love that you are not Karl Rove.

It is, in its way, a simple acknowledgment, a supremely fundamental idea. But trust me when I say, it holds tremendous power.

You are not Karl Rove. You are not, so far as you know, the master orchestrator of what is increasingly recognized as the most disastrous, divisive, scandal-ridden, secretive, abusive, warmongering, hate-inspiring, homophobic, morally debilitating neoconservative administration in modern American history...

That Time is Now!

Thanks to Oliver Willis for reminding me of this:

One of the greatest of Cartoon Network's "Groovies", back when they bothered --

That Time is Now (Superfriends): Michael Kohler!

PLAY IT LOUD - YOU'LL THANK ME. BTW, That's a Ted Knight sample at the beginning!

Because I had to Say Something:

GravatarI was just reading Atrios's post as well as the Media Matters link to the Limbaugh story, and I was wondering:

Why do we treat these people as anything other than liars? Is it like calling them Nazis, where some people simply stop listening?

Is there any advantage to treating them like reasonable people who might be swayed by a real argument, when we know that they are lying and will continue to lie to get whatever it is they want?

For instance:

Peter Beinart: I think Bush is right about preemption. For one thing, we aren't containing Saddam now--he's been free to build up his chemical, biological, and nuclear arsenal for almost four years now.

He lied. And any one of us can prove it with data, with facts, he lied. Why can't someone further up the food chain than me just say so?

What Kind of World...

In the quiet moments, when I'm not foaming over in a raging froth, I try to get into the heads of our opponents, and I wonder: Just what kind of world do they want, anyway?

They grew up with habeas corpus and privacy and civil rights, yet they do everything possible to abolish them.

They're just fine with the concept of permanent war, with an American theocracy, with gated communities, with a collapsing infrastructure - not only are they cool with it all, they INSIST on it, they fight for it!

Just what kind of world do they want, anyway?
