Whatever: Being Poor

Whatever:
Being Poor

Being PoorBeing poor is knowing exactly how much everything costs.

Being poor is getting angry at your kids for asking for all the crap they see on TV.

Being poor is having to keep buying $800 cars because they're what you can afford, and then having the cars break down on you, because there's not an $800 car in America that's worth a damn.

Being poor is hoping the toothache goes away.

Hey Meander,
You need to whore this blog at Eschaton once in a while, man! Didn't even know you had one.

I think you've hit a major problem right on the head. A good chunk of this country, including pretty much all of our elected leadership, has no idea what the reality of poor is. I've seen people here in Wisconsin going without heat in March because it costs too much. I've seen a family member go without medical treatments for both depression and back problems because they couldn't afford the proper care. The biggest thing Katrina makes me ask about the poor in New Orleans is "Where was the federal aid for the past 30 years?". It was no secret that New Orleans had some of the poorest urban neighborhoods in the country; where was the concern for these unfortunates then?
