Unnecessary drama

Personis Dramaticae:

The Little Empress (LE) - My youngest daughter
The Dreadful Bear (DB) - Mother of the LE and proof that I have historcally had utterly poor judgment in women.
The Red Queen (RQ) - My current partner, and proof that I'm starting to learn a thing or two.
The Older Daughter - The DB's older daughter and my next-best-thing-to-adopted daughter. I would crawl over broken glass for her.

So - I get a call last night from my ex, The Dreadful Bear, who wants to talk. Turns out her older daughter, 15, has abandoned (fled) her tender guardianship. Again.

The DB wants my support in making sure that the Older Daughter is prevented from contacting her little sister, and creating further rebellion in the ranks. I don't mention to her that the Oldest Daughter and I have already been in contact and that I know exactly where she is, and that I've already heard her side of the story.

"Let me get this straight - YOU want ME to help you keep the sisters apart?", I ask.

"Well, of course, I don't need both of them turned against me. I've done nothing wrong - I'm here for them every single day..."

"Except, of course," I say, "for the six months that you just ran away from them because raising them got too hard, you silly bitch."

*click*

It's only taken a decade (twleve years, to be precise), but I'm finally learning that everything, and I mean everything, she says is either crazy or a lie, or both.

To be continued, I'm so sure.

Dancing Queen

The release of Mamma Mia! The Movie on DVD is causing me no small amount of tsuris at home, I'm telling you.

The Red Queen is greatly looking forward to seeing it. It looks very girly and all "Traveling Pants"-ish to her, I think.

My problem is ABBA's music turns me into a GIANT FLAMING QUEEN. We're talking "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" here, people.

Not to mention it's got Christine Baranski, singing and dancing. I ADORE CHRISTINE BARANSKI.

It's just not a pretty situation, since the Red Queen, bless her homophobic little heart, has more than enough issues with my diva tendencies and gender identity issues.

I suspect she thinks that teh gaii going to rub off on her, I think. I'm more than a little concerned for her. On the other hand, a boy's gotta do, what a boy's gotta do.

Calling in Gay - I Didn't, But...

Seeing as I'm new at this state job, (less than a year), I chose not to call in gay today.

I regret that decision. I'm listening to these god-fearing Obama-loving women in my office, sneer and slur those who MIGHT be out today, all the while chuckling to homophobic remarks from being made on the air on the local black radio station, all the while unaware of the harm they are doing.

I regret that I was unable to make the statement today to support my brother whose partnership, a marriage truly, has lasted now the better part of twenty years, and who has adopted our niece after our sister passed away, and who is graduating from next year.

I regret that I was unable to make the statement today to support my ex-wife and best friend, who after almost two years in her own wilderness, has found her way back to her own lover, best friend and partner, discovering that they are both better together than they will ever were apart.

Equal rights for all under the law, is still a while coming. I will do more.

He's Cool Like That

From last night's SNL.

From Defamer.com:

Always a strong SNL soldier, Armisen's star has dimmed of late for what has been deemed a substandard Obama impression—indeed, by Obama himself.

The dissatisfaction was less over the fact that Armisen was Caucasian than it was over his inability to effectively capture the President-elect's voice and mannerisms. All this led to wide speculation, mostly thanks to this Daily Beast story, that the show was actively auditioning African-American candidates to take over Obama duties. Clearly, however, Armisen wasn't going to give up that easily.

In "Obama Plays It Cool," Armisen debuted his New, Improved Obama Impression, in which he effectively spoofs the famous temperament—no highs, no lows, just cool, improvisational thinking for tough times. He doesn't merely speed up towards the end of his sentences now, but instead offers a finely textured approximation of Obama's bassy bedside manner. Close your eyes. That's some damn good Obama.

Reading List

sekmet : The Houston Chron story about the birth certificate has over 900 comments. The wingnuts are just foaming and howling at the mouth. Pathetic

I spent a few minutes there yesterday. Just sad. Then I went to FactCheck.org to prove to a coworker that yes, there was a true copy, yes it was certified, yes it has the seal...they even have a shot of the newspaper birth announcement the week he was born.

But facts and evidence won't shut them up.

Retail Sales Are Weakest in 35 Years :
By STEPHANIE ROSENBLOOM
The nation's retailers turned in the worst sales figures in at least a generation on Thursday, starting the holiday shopping season with double-digit declines across a broad spectrum of stores.

For many chains, the precipitous sales drops that took hold in September and October got worse, not better, in November, despite relatively strong sales in the few days after Thanksgiving...

Black Friday was worthless, and a man dies in vain. January will be vile.

The Future of Energy?

Now, this is exciting:

Ocean currents can power the world, say scientists :

A revolutionary device that can harness energy from slow-moving rivers and ocean currents could provide enough power for the entire world, scientists claim.

The technology can generate electricity in water flowing at a rate of less than one knot - about one mile an hour - meaning it could operate on most waterways and sea beds around the globe.

Existing technologies which use water power, relying on the action of waves, tides or faster currents created by dams, are far more limited in where they can be used, and also cause greater obstructions when they are built in rivers or the sea. Turbines and water mills need an average current of five or six knots to operate efficiently, while most of the earth's currents are slower than three knots...

This is something worth looking at.
