The Future is Now

Just got a call from my co-worker.

"I just voted! I just voted!" She was so proud.

She, her 80-year old mother, and her 18-year old daughter went to the polls together this morning.

Three generations of black women, voting together.

May God Almighty save and protect any fool that chooses to stand against a wave of power like this - nothing else will.

Running out of Places To Park

Atrios discusses Car Sharing...

Maybe some other Houstonians can check me on this, but I'm getting the distinct impression that even here, we've run out of places to park. Any place worth getting to, you can't park there any more.

I believe that there would be major benefits in offering substantial tax incentives to taxi companies to increase their sizes in the short term.

Any major public transit intiative would take ten years to enact, but in the meanwhile, encouraging taxi companies to take up the slack will create employment, decrease emissions, and probably enhance public safety.

Losing His Religion

It occurs to me that McCain is making the same mistake that Al Gore made back in 2000.

Because of the impeachment and Lewinski issues, Gore decided to keep Clinton at arm's length, depriving himself of a major fundraiser and an effective advocate. He still won, of course, but maybe the extra votes may have made it harder for the Republicans to steal.

McCain is running hard AWAY from the Bush legacy and the base is abandoning him in droves. The fact is that the hardcore Thug faithful see Bush as a religious icon, like they do Reagan.

Choosing to run against Bush, as unbelievable as it is, is atomizing his base.

Crushes: Milla Jovovich

So, Friday night, TNT ran one of their periodic Superhero/Fantasy/Action bloc of movies. At least, I'm sure that's how they think of it.

Me, I always think of it as the Night of Kick-Ass Babes In Tight, Tight Pants!

First Kate Beckinsale In Underworld, Milla Jovovich in UltraViolet, and then Charlize Theron in Aeon Flux!

Milla Jovovich is my favorite go-to Kick-Ass Babe - Three Resident Evil movies, The Fifth Element, and of course, UltraViolet.

I look forward to as many more superheroines as she sees fit to play!

Reading list

Some things I read this last week...

Firedoglake : Republican Operative: “I don’t want everyone to vote”
"...Republicans are brazen. They conduct their voter suppression campaigns in the open. Voter roll purges. Phone calls into minority neighborhoods on election day giving inaccurate polling locations. Armed thugs hired to play police or border patrol agents at the polls. Black people harassed by the cops on their way to vote.

Paul Weyrich, one of the acknowledged architects of the right wing ascendancy, said bluntly (in the video above), "I don't want everybody to vote...our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down." Well, that's about as undemocratic a sentiment as can be heard in a democracy."

TPM - Poll: Obama Winning Over Groups Once Reluctant To Back Him
"...Meanwhile, McCain's favorability rating has dropped six points to 51%. And 59% say Obama shares their values, versus only 47% for McCain. So McCain's efforts to paint Obama as culturally out of touch, allied with shadowy figures, including terrorists, and different from you and me in a vaguely sinister way just may be proving to be a bust."

TPM : TROOPER-GATE REPORT: PALIN ABUSED POWER
On a 12-0 vote, the Alaska legislative panel investigating Trooper-Gate released its report late Friday, despite week's of effort by the McCain campaign to head off the probe. Among the findings: Palin abused her power as governor and fired public safety commissioner Walt Monegan in part because he refused to terminate Palin's ex-brother-in-law.

Universal health care NOW

It's time to seriously discuss universal health care.

From Spocko, one of my heroes:

I need to live in a society where my daughter's access to the insulin she needs every day to live is not subject to the whims of my employer. And I think Obama offers me that option.

I hope.
Adam Hominem

"...The economic crisis is actually the RIGHT time to start thinking about implementing universal health insurance.

The Progressive Shock Doctrine states that when there is an economic crisis it is the best time to look at Progressive solutions."

Sorry, Obama - any solution that allows the insurance companies to operate as they currently do is doomed to FAIL. Hillary can tell you that.

Medicaid for all citizens, and let the incos sell supplemental.

Random Incidents

Right-wing domestistic terrorism is a lock.

Gonna happen for sure, looking at the random incidents bubbling up.

The old man in Louisiana threating to shotgun people if doesn't get to vote against "that nigger", the relatively younger man who murdered a car salesman yesterday and then goes on a insane racist rant, IN JAIL, ON LIVE TV.

Projector

McCain's been going on about a planetarium projector all this time?

No shit?

Gramps, by any standards, a Senator who gets the Feds to buy a fucking planetarium projector for his people, is a fucking saint. What a mean fucking old man you are.

God, I'm embarassed just having to say that.

Blood Libel

Seeing as the the Dow tanked on Monday, I thought that I would break my "no cable news" rule and check out the discussion when I got home.

I was reminded AGAIN that I have a very good reason for that rule.

Lou Dobbs registered his disgust with the Dems, blamed them for the whole mess (!) and took a good five minute segment to offer up ACORN as an example of far-left malfeasance.

ACORN. Fucking ACORN, the community organizers and homeless organization.

And C&L has more details on Dobbs and the ACORN attack.

This is part of a huge push on the right, on the order of the immigration slander. They want to deny their own responsibility for the country's financial mess and economic failures and blame it on blacks, community organizers, and the average American homeowner and mortgage holders.
